6 Things You'll Definitely Hear In New York City

Ah, New York City. The Big Apple. The City that Never Sleeps. NYC has a lingo and culture all its own. The city's inhabitants, like the city itself, are as diverse as they are plentiful. New York City is filled to the brim with folk of all sorts. And while no two people in the Big Apple are alike, they may have a thing or two in common when it comes to how they choose to express their sentiments.

Here are a few things you’re bound to hear should you find yourself within the hustle and bustle of NYC:

1. Ugh. Times Square? No thanks.

The NYC locals don’t quite see the famed Times Square with the same starry-eyed wonder as their tourist counterparts. It’s often perceived to be more nuisance than attraction. Even on a good day, a native New Yorker will avoid this tourist trap like the plague.

2. Where is the (bleep)-ing train?

NYC locals don’t like to be kept waiting. Ever. Patience can run pretty short on subway platforms.

3. Starbucks is so overrated.

With coffee shops aplenty and many New Yorkers keeping themselves sustained with enough coffee to fill the Great Lakes, they have the means and opportunity to be choosy. Besides, Starbucks is overrated.

4. Relax! I’m walking here!

This of course, being the automated response to any car horn in the vicinity. A few expletives are usually involved too, but we didn’t want to frighten you. NYC locals could curse a pirate under the table any day. Just ask ‘em.

5. That place has the best _______.

Insert pizza, bagels, tacos, ad infinitum.

6. Oh that place? That used to be a ________.

Bakery, laundromat, video store, again, ad infinitum.
